How do I prepare for a Lumecca treatment?

The area needs to be shaved and can not be tanned for four weeks before treatment. At least 30 SPF sunblock must be used with sun exposure.

Lumecca can precipitate a herpes outbreak.   If there is any history of cold sores, a prescription for Valtrex will be given to prevent recurrence.

You must stop using hydroquinone, retinol and other irritant creams 3 days before treatment.  If you have been taking Accutane, the treatment can only be done 6 months after terminating Accutane.

If you are taking blood thinners, there is no need to stop blood thinners but there will be more bruising noticed after treatment.

What can I expect after Lumecca treatment?

It is normal for skin to become red for a few hours and feel hot. Red spots will turn blue-purple and brown spots will become darker and worse before they dry up and flake off.

What precautions are there post-treatment?

Sun exposure will reverse the treatment. Sunblock SPF 30 or higher must always be used afterward. Moisturizer can be applied to dry skin, and make-up may be applied immediately after treatment. Hydroquinone and retinol can be started 3 days after treatment.

What are the risks of Lumecca?

Lumecca can cause hair loss so it is not used on bearded areas or eyebrows. It cannot be used on tattoos as well since there is pigment in tattoos. It is not for anyone who is prone to keloids or has a history of epilepsy and seizures because it is a light therapy.
